The Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) has jokingly said it is "monitoring the situation closely" as England prepares to meet Norway this evening in the FIFA World Cup 2026 quarter-finals.

Kick-off is scheduled for 10pm BST on Saturday, July 11.

The fixture will take place at Miami Stadium, which holds just over 65,000 spectators.

ITV will broadcast the quarter-final live across the UK. The commercial channel takes over following the BBC's coverage of England's thrilling victory against Mexico in the round of 16.

In a post on X, formerly Twitter, the FCDO wrote: "There is an increased risk of losing to England at approximately 10pm on Saturday 11 July.

"We recommend monitoring the situation closely [wink face emoji]".

Further text within an accompanying graphic stated: "We continue to recommend watching the match closely for the latest updates".

England's triumph over Mexico during the early hours of Monday attracted a peak viewership of 9.1 million on the BBC. Despite the fixture commencing at 2am BST, it drew an average audience of 7.8m between BBC One and iPlayer.

With the Norway encounter starting at a far more reasonable hour for British viewers, live figures could approach 20m.

Should England overcome Norway, they will meet either reigning champions Argentina or Switzerland in a semi-final on Wednesday, July 15.
