Gogglebox star Tom Malone Jr has shared an emotional update on his health and asked fans to wish him luck as he is rushed to the hospital for knee surgery. The TV reality star, who is also a professional dancer, took to social media and said he has not been able to "dance properly" in the past seven months.
The 31-year-old thought he tore his meniscus knee but had only recently found out he suffered a bucket handle tear, which required surgery. After a long consultation with the doctors, he was given two options to fix the tear and one could left him with arthritis in the future. He told fans: "I'm not scared of going into surgery, but the hardest part about it all is not knowing what I'm going to be dealing with afterwards.
"I know from the outside as a dancer, it seems glamorous, and you see the big stages, you see me flying all over to different places competing, you've seen me on stage, at the stadiums and arenas, but this is another part of the dance world that people don't talk about much, so wish me luck."
The doctors told Tom that they will have to cut open his knee to see if it's fully repairable. He said: "The options are they either give me a meniscectomy, which they'll cut out the torn part and I can recover in six weeks, but I only have part of the meniscus, so I'm likely to develop arthritis. On the other side, they'll be able to fully repair my meniscus, which will be great long term, but I'll probably be out for six months, which isn't ideal.
"So tomorrow, I'm going in for surgery, and it's kind of a surgery lucky dip. I'm going to have no idea what surgery I'm having until I wake up after the surgery. Fun."
Fans commented on Tom's Instagram to show support, as one said: "Good luck, Tom! You will be back better than ever, and we will see you at Worlds."
Another, who had the same experience, shared: "Good luck. I had the same situation in January. Having an operation not knowing what would be done. My meniscus could not be repaired, so I had the damaged section trimmed. All good from six weeks after, but as you say, repair would have been their first choice."
A third said: "Hope you can get sorted and are soon back training. Good, you can get surgery. I have a tear in mine, and it's taking forever to heal; the spasms are painful, so I feel your pain."
On Saturday, Tom posted an update on Instagram Story and shared a picture of himself resting in the hospital. He put his thumbs up and said: "Job done! Thank you, everyone, for the support."
