UK supermarket chain Morrisons is making a key change to its in-store offering, which was previously cut to reduce costs.

The chain last year closed 35 meat and 35 fish counters from locations across the UK, along with 52 cafes, 13 florists, four pharmacies and all 18 branches of its Market Kitchen format.

The move was met with backlash from customers.

Morrisons said at the time that the chosen locations were unprofitable.

The supermarket chain is now bringing back its Market Street counters at select stores.

The counters will still feature the "traditional" manned service and will be updated to include flatbeds as well as more grab and go options.

The upgrade will also see additions like digital ordering screens at pizza counters.

Morrisons said it has significantly improved the waste yield from its counters in the year since the closures, making the counters more efficient to run.

"Our Market Street counters are part of our DNA," a spokesman for the supermarket told The Grocer.

"They are at the heart of our offer and a real differentiator for Morrisons."

The spokesperson said the supermarket had "closed a small number of meat and fish counters last year - and have learned a lot from that".

"We have listened to customers and are now planning to reopen a number of these over the coming months," they said.

The Market Street counters will be a phased reopening, with a small number set to open every month.

Counters have already been reopened at a some locations, including Great Park in Newcastle, Herne Bay, Thornbury and Yeadon in Leeds, with more to come, Morrisons confirmed.

Morrisons has not revealed how many of the 70 closed counters will be replaced.

The chain not planning to reopen any of the cafes, florists, Market Kitchen or pharmacies that were closed.

The move comes as the supermarket confirms the first wave of closures after announcing 100 locations will be shut.
