Kent boasts an abundance of picturesque villages, each offering their own distinctive charm and character. Yet one settlement in particular has earned the coveted title of England's prettiest village, and it is not difficult to understand why. Modest in size but brimming with stunning landscapes, medieval character and a fascinating past, Eynsford is nestled in the Darent Valley, which forms part of the Kent Downs Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.
The River Darent winds its way through the village, which is flanked by rolling hills, agricultural land, woodland and sweeping grasslands. Conveniently reachable by public transport, it makes for an ideal weekend retreat, whether you fancy a leisurely pub lunch or wish to immerse yourself in Roman and Norman heritage. On a fine day, the riverbank is undoubtedly the finest spot to linger. As a chalk stream, the water emerges directly from the chalk bedrock beneath, producing exceptionally pure and crystal-clear water.
However, Eynsford's appeal extends well beyond its natural beauty. History enthusiasts are equally well catered for, with Eynsford Castle standing as one of the village's most celebrated landmarks.
Overseen by English Heritage, these impressive ruins showcase an excellent example of an early Norman 'enclosure castle'. Constructed in the 1080s, it is free to wander and provides an ideal location for a picnic.
Afterwards, a brief stroll along the riverside path brings you to one of Britain's most remarkable Roman archaeological sites - the Lullingstone Roman Villa. Housed within a contemporary observation building, visitors can gaze down upon exquisite mosaic floors and uncommon early Christian wall paintings.
Adjacent to the villa stands Lullingstone Castle, a historic manor house with origins tracing back to the Domesday Book.
No trip to Eynsford would be complete without stopping at a local pub for lunch, and amongst the most favoured establishments is the Plough Inn. Overlooking the river, it offers the ideal setting to relax with a drink or meal following a day of discovery.
Enthusiasts have been posting glowing reviews of the country pub and restaurant on TripAdvisor, with one satisfied patron noting: "Had a delicious Sunday roast here before a walk that made me want to come back again as soon as poss! Service was great and the atmosphere was cosy too. Would defo recommend!!"
For something lighter, the Riverside Tearoom proves perfect, while the Malt Shovel offers an excellent venue to savour a wine in the sunshine.
