A huge fire has erupted in Widnes, with an eyewitness describing the "entire sky over Liverpool turning black" and "multiple explosions" taking place. More than 700 tones of waste cardboard have caught fire at a recycling facility on Everite Road.
Emergency services have rushed to the scene, with fire engines from Widnes, Runcorn, Penketh, Congleton, Warrington, Frodsham and Northwich, plus a weekday fire engine, present. One witness told the Liverpool ECHO: "The entire sky over Liverpool is turning black and multiple explosions are currently taking place. It is a big fire. I’m looking into Widnes. The fire is so big. It started about 25 minutes ago. It's a big warehouse."
