Taking to X/Twitter, Piers issued a scathing reaction, writing: "BREAKING: Keir Starmer cries as he resigns as UK Prime Minister. Sad end to a dismal tenure. "Never seen such a big election win end in such abject failure so fast. Bottom line: he wanted power but didn’t know how to lead the country. He was the ultimate man without a plan."
Piers has been very vocal about his thoughts regarding Starmer's premiership. Back in 2024, the broadcaster shared: "Congrats to Keir Starmer on becoming our new Prime Minister.
"When I interviewed him for Life Stories, I concluded he’s a good, decent, hard-working, self-made man who wants the best for his country. He’s also an Arsenal fan, which augurs well. I wish him every success."
In the years that followed, the presenter joined the chorus calling for the PM's resignation. Earlier this year, Piers shared a photo of them both together, captioned: "Keir, you’re a good man. A decent man. An Arsenal fan (always a good test of a man).
"When you did Life Stories, I found your remarkable journey to the top of British politics very inspiring. But this can’t go on. For the good of the country, resign. @keirstarmer."
During the announcement, Starmer revealed that he has asked Labour's governing body to set out a timetable for his replacement, with nominations opening on July 9 and closing by the parliamentary summer recess on July 16.
The 63-year-old added that if there were a contest, a new leader would be in place before Parliament returns in September, and he would "do everything" he could to ensure an "orderly" transition of power.
Sir Keir said he would remain as prime minister until the leadership contest is complete.
The PM added he would give his successor "my full and unequivocal support, knowing that they will inherit a Britain that is far stronger and fairer than the one I inherited two years ago".
Ending his speech on an emotional end, Starmer concluded: "When I leave the biggest job in the country, I shall spend more time on the most important job, being the best husband I can to my fantastic wife Vic, who has been a rock by my side through good times and bad; and being the best dad I can to my beautiful children, who are my pride and my joy."
