Police have launched an urgent investigation after two shocking ram raids in two days saw two cash machines stolen using heavy machinery. CCTV shows crooks using a JCB telehandler to smash their way into a branch of Nationwide Building Society on the High Street in Ramsey, Cambs, sometime in the early hours of Tuesday, June 16. Police were called at 3.17am.
Just 24 hours later, thieves struck again using a telehandler to rip out a cash machine from the Asda supermarket in Ness Road, Burwell, around 30 miles away on June 17. Police were alerted to the second raid at 4.57am. In both instances, a telehandler, which is a combination of a forklift and a crane, and two other vehicles were used in the raid.
Cambridgeshire Police said it was "actively investigating both incidents".
Detective Inspector Jim Donington said: “We understand incidents like this are concerning for local residents, particularly given this is the second ram raid in the county in two days. Dedicated patrols are in place and we are actively investigating both incidents.
“We would urge anyone who sees suspicious behaviour, or who knows of vehicles that may have been stolen or are being used in unusual circumstances, to report this to us. Information from the public is vital in helping us prevent further offences and identify those responsible.”
The force said officers are keen to hear from anyone who may have witnessed the incident, saw suspicious vehicles or activity in the area at the time, or has dashcam, doorbell or CCTV footage that could assist the investigation.
Police said the June 16 incident was caught on CCTV, which showed two vehicles pulling up near the bank before a telehandler is driven into the shot.
The telehandler is then rammed into the building several times before the cash machine is ripped out and the vehicles are driven away, leaving the telehandler dumped in the street.
Anyone who may have witnessed the incident, saw suspicious vehicles or activity in the area at the time, or has dashcam, doorbell or CCTV footage that could assist the investigation is asked to contact the police quoting reference 35/44789/26.
