Shabana Mahmood's immigration reforms are facing growing opposition from Labour MPs. The Home Secretary's Immigration and Asylum Bill is back in the Commons on Monday for its latest hurdle.

The draft legislation aims to crack down on illegal immigration. Measures include making it harder for asylum seekers to use human rights laws to block their removal and making migrants repay the cost of their accommodation.

Plans to increase the time migrants must wait before they can apply to stay permanently in the UK, including those already in the country, have sparked a backlash from some Labour MPs. However, those proposals are not part of the vote in the House of Commons later.

About 80 MPs have reportedly written to the prime minister-in-waiting, Andy Burnham, calling on him to water down the immigration reforms.

Sir Keir Starmer's successor is expected to back the Bill in Monday's vote despite a growing mutiny among Left-wing Labour backbenchers.

Tory Shadow Home Secretary Chris Philp said he was concerned Mr Burnham would be a "weak" PM.

He told GB News: "These 80-odd Left-wing Labour MPs are putting pressure on Andy Burnham and Shabana Mahmood to water down the proposals.

"It should take 10 years before someone gets the right to stay permanently.
