Norway boasts an abundance of breathtaking roads. From snow-capped peaks to glacial passes, a road trip through this stunning nation ensures there is never a dull moment.

Yet it is not solely about open roads — Norway is also home to one of the most spectacular tunnels on the planet. The Laerdal tunnel in West Norway is the longest road tunnel in the world, stretching 24.5 kilometres (15 miles) beneath a mountain range. It connects Aurland and Laerdal, in the heart of Sogn, and provides a ferry-free connection between Oslo and Bergen.

Construction of the tunnel began in 1995 and finished in 2000, and during construction, an incredible 2,500,000 cubic meters of rock were extracted from the tunnel.

It cost a whopping £75million to construct. The tunnel is divided into four sections separated by three large caves.

The tunnel is renowned as one of the most striking in the world owing to its ingenious design, which actively combats driver fatigue and claustrophobia.

The principal section of the tunnel is brilliantly illuminated with white lights, while each cave features blue and yellow lighting around the edges to conjure the impression of a sunrise.

These caves were designed with the intention of alleviating the tedium of the tunnel and affording drivers a brief respite.

The caves additionally serve as turning points throughout the 20-minute journey.

A rumble strip in each lane also prevents drivers from losing concentration and veering off course. At each kilometre mark, a sign informs you of the distance you have covered through the tunnel and how far remains ahead.

Among the other remarkable features of the Laerdal Tunnel is the distinction of being the first in the world to be fitted with an air treatment plant.

This facility is housed within a cavern measuring 100 metres in width, and it extracts both dust and nitrogen dioxide from the tunnel's air supply.
