Police have defended their decision not to release CCTV footage or suspect descriptions in the investigation into the death of former minister Ann Widdecombe. Devon and Cornwall Police Assistant Chief Constable Matt Longman said officers were making progress but had taken an “active decision” to withhold further details at this stage.

He explained: “Releasing such information prematurely could compromise ongoing enquiries and may prejudice future investigative opportunities". In a detailed statement, Mr Longman thanked the local community and those who had already come forward with information. He said: “We have been working at pace on this investigation. Officers are making progress and are pursuing a number of lines of enquiry."

Ms Widdecombe, 78, a former Conservative minister who later became a prominent Reform UK campaigner, was found dead at her home in Haytor Vale on the edge of Dartmoor on Thursday morning.

Police believe she was attacked at around 12.30pm the previous day, shortly after completing a morning media appearance and while due to join another broadcast. She had sustained serious injuries.

Mr Longman stressed that the decision to withhold material, including potential suspect descriptions and CCTV, was “made on an operational basis”. He added: “We will release information to the public when it is appropriate and necessary, in order to support the investigation."

Mr Longman appealed directly to the public, saying: “I would ask the public again, please do not speculate on social media. If you have any relevant information and have not yet reported, please do so via the major incident public portal.

“Our thoughts remain with Ann Widdecombe’s family and friends at this sad time. They continue to be supported by specialist officers. We will provide updates as and when we are able to and thank you for your patience.”

A 26-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of murder shortly after the investigation was upgraded but has since been released without charge and is no longer part of the inquiry. Police have ruled out terrorism and said there is no information suggesting a political motive, though they remain open-minded.

The force’s cautious approach comes amid intense public and media interest in the high-profile case. Ms Widdecombe’s death has prompted tributes from across the political divide, with Reform UK leader Nigel Farage among those highlighting the dangers faced by public figures.

Detectives continue to appeal for witnesses and urge anyone with information, however minor, to come forward. The investigation remains active with significant resources deployed.
