Ann Widdecombe had Meghan Markle's number long before the Duchess of Sussex left the Royal Family. The former Conservative Party MP and minister, who was found dead in her home on July 8, had made her thoughts clear on Meghan during an appearance on Celebrity Big Brother.
Widdecombe, who later became a media personality and Reform UK spokesperson, made the admission to her fellow housemates back in 2018. Made in Chelsea star Ashley James applied the 70-year-old’s make-up, they began to discuss Prince Harry’s fiancée. While James would praise the Duchess of Sussex for her beauty, Widdecombe had little positive to say about the Royal Family member.
“I think she’s trouble,” Ann said at the time.
Rachel Johnson proceed to question her: “Why do you think she’s trouble Ann?".
Widdecombe replied: "Background, attitude, I worry."
She would also note she was "uneasy" because Meghan had been married before and was older than Prince Harry.
Widdecombe was found dead with serious injuries at her Dartmoor home on Thursday (July 8). Concerns were first flagged when she failed to appear for a scheduled TV appearance on Wednesday afternoon.
A 26-year-old male suspect was arrested in Newton Abbot a day after Widdecombe's death. Police have since confirmed the suspect has been released from custody and is no longer part of the investigation.
Authorities have stated the investigation is not being treated as terrorism, and there is currently no evidence that it was a politically motivated crime. A neighbour of Widdecombe reported seeing a suspicious van and a white British man wearing hiking clothes in the area during the early hours of the morning before the murder investigation was officially launched at her Haytor home.
Devon and Cornwall Police Assistant Chief Constable Matt Longman said her death is being treated as suspicious, but "we do not believe there is a wider risk to the public".
He said: "We believe the attack took place on Wednesday July 8 at around 12.30pm. Our inquiries are moving at pace for a suspect who is believed to be a white male."
