The family of a three-year-old boy who was seriously injured after ending up in a crocodile enclosure at a zoo in the UK has issued a statement. The toddler was allegedly 'thrown' into a crocodile enclosure at Johnsons of Old Hurst Zoo in Cambridgeshire by a man with learning difficulties.

The injured boy, who has not been publicly named, underwent "multiple surgeries" following the incident. The force has confirmed the toddler remains in Addenbrooke’s Hospital in a stable condition and faces a long road to recovery. In a statement, the boy's family described his recovery as "extremely challenging" and expressed gratitude to the zoo and the public for the overwhelming support they have received.

The full statement read: “We would like to thank the staff at the zoo who rescued our son from the enclosure. We are truly grateful for the public support and well-wishes we have received, as well as to everyone who has been directly involved in our son's care and recovery in hospital.

“Our attention remains focused on his recovery and supporting him through this extremely challenging and prolonged period of time.”

A 30-year-old man from Norfolk was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder following the incident. He was later released on bail after being assessed as "not being fit for interview".

Cambridgeshire Police said the boy “sustained serious injuries while in the enclosure” and “was pulled out by staff from the zoo”.

Tracey Johnson, the zoo’s co-owner, reportedly jumped into the enclosure to save the child.

A fundraising page has been set up to support the toddler's recovery and rehabilitation, as well as to support the family throughout the coming months. The organiser or the fundraising page thanked the "extraordinary bravery and quick actions of those nearby", saying "the little boy was rescued by the zoo owners and rushed to hospital in a critical condition".

The fundraising page adds: "After undergoing multiple surgeries, his condition is now stable, but he faces a long road to recovery. His parents are currently by his side in hospital, supporting him through both immediate and ongoing care physically and psychologically.

"The family are deeply grateful for the kindness, prayers, and well wishes they have received. They kindly ask that their son’s privacy is respected and that he is not identified or named in the media or on social media."

Any funds remaining after the family’s needs have been met will be donated to charities and organisations affiliated with the Addenbrooke’s Trust that support other families facing similar circumstances.
