Nina Warhurst was supported on social media after she uploaded a candid video urging the public to support those people living with dementia during the UK's extreme heatwave. The BBC News presenter had first-hand experience as she opened about the loss of her dad, Chris Warhurst, who died in July last year of mixed dementia. He had been diagnosed with Alzheimer's and vascular dementia in 2022.
Nina, 45, shared a heartfelt message with her 53,000 Instagram followers about the issues for those living with the condition while temperatures continue to rise. She began: "Just a reminder if you or someone you care about are living with dementia to take extra care in the hot weather. And people living with dementia may not always be fully aware they are hot, or they are feeling dehydrated and need a drink."
Nina continued: "They might not be able to communicate it. They might not necessarily be aware of the sort of right, lighter clothing to wear.
I remember with my dad, who got very poorly. He entered a stage of delirium on a couple of occasions with the hot weather."
The BBC host concluded: "It's just something really important to look out for. But always remember there's still lots of fun to be had alongside dementia. Just take care in the hot weather."
She captioned the post: "Keep your dementia friends, rellies, neighbours, and good selves hydrated. And don’t forget to keep having fun. #dementia #dementiaawareness #livingwithdementia."
Her followers flooded the comment section as one person penned: "So true & well said, Nina. A good reminder to us all - thank you so much."
Another wrote: "Bless you Nina. You are such a caring person," while a third added, "Nina you’re just so lovely."
Her sweet message comes just days after the BBC News at One presenter admitted she’s battling through a “tough week” after sparking concern with her on-air appearance.
Viewers were worried after she was seen with swelling on her left eyelid.
She has since addressed her tough week saying the heartbreaking news stories she has to cover, including the death of toddler Preston Davey, had made for a difficult week.
