Beach Holidays

As summer has officially arrived, with temperatures forecast to hit 40 degrees during the latest heatwave, it's understandable to want to leave behind your daily routine and head to the seaside for the day. Fortunately, you don't need to venture far to discover a beautiful beach, as the UK boasts numerous stunning coastal spots that could easily compete with those found in the Mediterranean. But, while most beaches will be packed with holidaymakers or residents basking in the sunshine or taking a refreshing swim, there are also numerous hidden treasures scattered around just waiting to be discovered.

One woman who shares content on TikTok as 'wonder_lesea' has revealed a glimpse of what these beaches have to offer, claiming it's a 'slice of the Mediterranean – but just an hour from London. She wrote in the caption of the post: "Feels like Spain, but it's Kent."

The beach in question is Mermaid Beach, situated in Folkestone, Kent. It's a little-known gem nestled beneath the cliffs near Sunny Sands Beach and the Folkestone Harbour Arm. Its name comes from its striking coastline, featuring rocks formed like a mermaid's tail.

Mermaid Beach is a secluded shingle beach offering visitors a peaceful and charming escape. Meanwhile, imposing cliffs create a dramatic backdrop for the shore, producing a scenic vista.

"A hidden beach with turquoise water and a walking trail through cliffs and lush parkland," the woman explained in the caption of her post. "Like a slice of the Mediterranean – but just an hour from London."

For those planning a day by the seaside, numerous nearby establishments offer coffee, snacks, sandwiches, and ice cream, while barbecues are also permitted on the beach. However, pet owners should note that dogs are only allowed outside the main season.

The beach sits just a 15-minute stroll from Folkestone town centre, making it easily reachable for those travelling by train, with services from London taking merely 58 minutes. For visitors with additional time, there's also a somewhat longer route which winds through the Lower Leas Coastal Park. This picturesque yet steep walking path leads through artificial grottoes constructed at the conclusion of the First World War.

The woman wasn't alone in her admiration for the beach, as numerous viewers subsequently shared their own reactions. One person said: "Thanks to you just booked a small holiday in Folkestone."

Someone else said: "mermaid beach is beautiful. I live an hour away and have been twice now. it's peaceful and beautiful and most importantly, clean. I won't comment on the surrounding areas as my aim was to spend the day on the beach."

"I was there last year for the first time and definitely it's my favourite 'till now, water is clean and the area it's very nice, I went back a few times, lovely," a third person said.

However, someone else also went on to share: "All fun 'till you can't use your phone for five minutes because it thinks you're in France (this happened to me when I went there)."
