Emilia Clarke has spoken out about the future of spy thriller Ponies - and the news appears encouraging for fans, reports the Mirror.

Ponies premiered earlier this year on Peacock, Sky, and NOW, captivating viewers across the board.

The first season currently boasts an impressive 97 per cent fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes alongside an 83 per cent score on the Popcornmeter.

The eight-episode series follows two secretaries stationed at the US embassy in Moscow in 1977, who transform into CIA operatives following the suspicious deaths of their husbands.

Game of Thrones star Clarke portrays over-educated, Russian-speaking child of Soviet immigrants Beatrice 'Bea' Grant, while Split and The White Lotus actress Hayley Lu Richardson plays small-town girl Twila Hasbeck.

The pair join forces to expose a sprawling Cold War conspiracy and unravel the mystery behind their widowhood.

Has Ponies been renewed for season 2?

Ponies has not yet received the green light for a second season; however, Clarke has recently discussed the series' prospects.

Speaking to Variety, she revealed there had been "many discussions" regarding the show's future.

She added: "I'm very fortunate to be an actual producer, so I get to be a part of these conversations."

The first season of Ponies concluded on a cliffhanger, with the programme-makers hopeful of securing a renewal imminently.

Alongside Clarke and Richardson, Ponies also features Adrian Lester, Artjom Gilz, Vic Michaelis, Nicholas Podany, and Petro Ninovskyi.

Ponies is created by David Iserson and Susanna Fogel. Clarke confessed that, before securing the role, she had little knowledge of the period's history.

However, upon travelling to Budapest to film Ponies, she embarked on a walking tour that proved to be a fascinating insight into Cold War history.

She told Cosmopolitan: "I mean the basis of "trust no one, World War III will happen tomorrow" energy is the biggest takeaway that we all have."

Clarke went on to describe this as merely the "tip of the iceberg", adding that "understanding the actual geopolitical landscape" was both "deeply fascinating and harrowing".

Meanwhile, Richardson told the publication: "It was really interesting to immerse ourselves with these characters into that time and world."
