A major baby formula company has recalled batches of its products due to the risk of a toxin that causes nausea, abdominal cramps and vomiting. Nestle has warned buyers of specific batches of its SMA infant formula and follow-on formula not to feed them to their babies because of the potential presence of cereulide. A heat-resistant toxin, cereulide can cause symptoms including nausea, abdominal cramps and vomiting once consumed, according to the Food Standards Agency (FSA).

In a recall notice, Nestle said there had been no confirmed reports of illness linked to the products concerned, but customers should avoid using them "out of an abundance of caution". "The safety and wellbeing of babies is our absolute priority," the notice said. "Nestle has decided to perform this voluntary product recall in line with our strict product quality and safety protocols."

"Customers who may have these batches should not feed this product to their baby," it continued. 

"We understand that this news may cause concern for parents, and we sincerely apologise for any concern or inconvenience caused to parents, caregivers or customers."

The affected batches were available to buy in the UK and Ireland, with a full list of the specific codes available to view on the Nestle and FSA websites.

The batch codes can be found on the base of the baby formula tin or box for powdered products and on the container for ready-made alternatives.

Customers who have purchased one of the affected products have been urged to contact Nestle's careline on 0800 0 81 81 80 (UK) 1800 931 832 (Ireland) for a refund.

"If you have been prescribed one of these batches listed, please destroy the product and speak to your Healthcare Professional for advice on an alternative," the notice said.

"Anyone concerned abouttheir baby's health should [also] contact a healthcare professional. 

"All other Nestle products and other batches of the same products that are not in the scope of this voluntary recall are safe to consume."
