A section of the M5 motorway has been cordoned off overnight following a grave multi-vehicle accident that resulted in one casualty being airlifted from the scene by rescue helicopter.
According to National Highways, the horror collision forced a total closure of the motorway in both directions. While the northbound lanes were successfully reopened to motorists shortly after 4am, its southbound counterpart remains a no-go zone.
A spokesperson for the British highway authority stated that all drivers who were stranded within the northbound closure have since been released from the blockade. Conversely, those stuck within the southbound lanes are only just starting to be freed from the M5 closure after a night stuck on the sealed-off motorway.
The southbound stretch of the M5, between Junction 24 at Bridgwater and Junction 25 at Taunton, is expected to stay inaccessible until at least the late morning with police still at the scene carrying out essential forensic investigations.
