The prime suspect in the disappearance of Madeleine McCann has issued a chilling warning as police look to bring him to trial in the UK. Christian Brueckner, 49, hit back at Metropolitan Police detectives who want to extradite him to Britain, warning them: "I have good lawyers".

Madeleine disappeared when she was three years old from a holiday apartment in Praia da Luz in the Algarve on May 3 2007, sparking a huge police search. And now a senior officer at Scotland Yard is reportedly spearheading efforts to bring charges against the German suspect ahead of the 20th anniversary of Madeleine’s disappearance next year, with hopes of having Brueckner in London. Brueckner acknowledged the reports this morning, when approached by The Mirror and said he was uncertain about what would happen next. When quizzed about he was feeling, he responded: “No comment… I have good lawyers.”

The German prisoner and convicted rapist was named an official suspect in 2022. A the time, he was serving a sentence for the rape of a 72-year-old woman in Praia da Luz.

Brueckner has previously denied any involvement in Madeleine’s disappearance, however remains the prime suspect in both the German and British investigations into what happened.

According to The Telegraph, a request for Brueckner to be sent to the UK to stand trial could be rejected by Berlin because the German constituion prevents the extradition of its citizens to non-EU countries.
