Celebrity News

This year's Celebrity Traitors contestants were pictured arriving to film the reality show over the weekend, and it was immediately obvious there would be a very different vibe to this series, which will air in the autumn. Pictures showed the 21 contestants jetting into Inverness airport instead of taking the train. They also all appeared to be ferried to the famous castle in individual cars instead of piling into minivans in groups like last year's collective.

Aside from the environmental issues, these photos would appear to back up claims that this year's celebrities are already engaging in diva behaviour and making demands, which is bad news for the show. Admittedly, the lineup includes some bona fide A-listers, including Hollywood stars Michael Sheen, Richard E. Grant and Bella Ramsay and international supermodel, and Mick Jagger's ex-wife, Jerry Hall. However, anyone taking part should surely be embracing the spirit of it and throwing themselves into the experience rather than insisting on certain criteria.

While it is not clear which stars are at fault, a source told The Sun: "Although most of the stars are British, so many of them are so used to working in America that their teams are used to the Hollywood treatment. They don’t want to find themselves thrust into the spotlight, or put in any kind of danger, so they demand substantial security the minute they arrive."

Part of the charm of the first series of Celebrity Traitors was seeing the stars outside of their comfort zones. Everyone was on an equal footing, and they eschewed their celeb airs and graces to embrace the game, no matter what level of celebrity they had. They all mingled freely and were seen chatting and laughing outside their hotel prior to filming.

This year's group seems more standoffish despite many of them already knowing each other. In another departure from last year, they are said to have arrived with their PR teams and partners. It is reported that producers have had to fork out a seven-figure sum to provide enough security for the group. This is bad optics at a time when the BBC are laying people off.

The 21 contestants are rounded off by University Challenge presenter Amol Rajan, comedian James Acaster, chart-topping singer James Blunt, funny woman Joanne McNally, comic Joe Lycett, former Coronation Street star Julie Hesmondhalgh, Content Creator King Kenny, former Little Mix star Leigh-Anne Pinnock, Love Island's Maya Jama, Broadcaster and Entrepreneur, actor and author Miranda Hart, and Industry actor Myha’la.

Also in the mix are Broadcaster and Mathematician Professor Hannah Fry. TV duo Rob Beckett and Romesh Ranganathan, EastEnders Ross Kemp, Musician Sebastian Croft and actress Sharon Rooney.

It's fair to say that most of these have no place displaying airs and graces, or any diva behaviour. They are seriously risking turning viewers off before the show even starts. They are all said to be taking a significantly lower fee than they would usually demand for a TV show, but what they are losing in cash, they will make up for in exposure.

This kind of behaviour and reinforcement of their status will trickle down to the show and make it harder to work together on tasks. Realistically, you can't make A-list demands and then be seen to pander to a B-lister if one of the games demands it!

Unlike many reality shows, at least the contestants are recognisable, and the BBC have compiled quite an impressive collective. But they need to nip their demands in the bud and treat the "stars" like regular contestants if they want to maintain the show's spirit.
