The King touched down in Bermuda this evening, having concluded his four-day state visit to the US just hours earlier. Arriving at L.F Wade International Airport at dusk, the UK government's VIP Airbus A321neo plane had the Royal Standard and Bermuda flag flying out the cockpit window.

Stepping out of the aircraft, Charles quickly descended, holding his left hand along the railings. He was met on the tarmac by the Governor of Bermuda, Andrew Murdoch, with the pair chatting animatedly and the King indicating his watch, likely in reference to his jam-packed day that saw him travel from Washington DC to Virginia and back before flying to the Caribbean island.

He then greeted the rest of the line up, which included the Premiere of Bermuda, David Burt, his wife, Kristin, and half a dozen other dignitaries and their wives. At the end of the red carpet, the King received a royal salute from the Royal Bermuda Regiment (RBR), who have the Duchess of Gloucester as their Colonel-in-Chief and she came over to celebrate their 60th anniversary last October.

Wearing their white tunics, navy trousers with red stripes and navy and red hats, they stood in a guard of honour.

It was only a small affair with no fanfare, as the King will receive a ceremonial welcome, featuring a guard of honour mounted by the RBR and a 21-gun salute, at King’s Square tomorrow morning.

At the end of the red carpet, His Majesty pointed at the travelling UK media and said “you made it!" before climbing into his waiting car.

The BMW was part of a more modest convoy than the one he received in the US. It was composed of 10 cars, eight police motorbikes and just one police car.

Charles travelled to Bermuda alone, with the Queen having headed back to the UK following her final engagement in Virginia, US, on Thursday afternoon.

Highlights of the King’s royal visit include an engagement with young people and conservation leaders, a celebration of Bermuda’s heritage and arts and the opening of the new Great Bay Coast Guard Station.

Earlier on Thursday, President Trump hailed Charles as “the greatest king in my book” as he bade farewell to his royal guests at the White House.

The King and Queen concluded their “wonderful whistle-stop” US state visit by saying goodbye to the President and First Lady and joining a traditional block party in Virginia.

In Washington, the two couples said warm goodbyes outside the South Portico of the White House, with Mr Trump telling the media as they posed for a final photo, “He’s a great king, the greatest king in my book”.

In a sign of his renewed admiration for the monarch, Mr Trump said he would be placing the bell gifted to him by the King during the trip in the Oval Office, next to the bust of Winston Churchill.

“I want to see it,” he told the broadcaster, having been presented with the original bell from the conning tower of HMS Trump, a Royal Navy submarine that fought in the Battle of the Pacific in World War Two, at the state dinner on Tuesday night.

And the Queen has described the visit as “good fun” despite its fast pace. Chatting with TODAY co-host Jenna Bush Hager during her visit to the New York Public Library on Wednesday, Camilla said: "It's been a whistle stop. It's been really good fun. But we have moved quite fast."

"You've been to a lot of places, to quite a few," Jenna commented, in acknowledgement of the 18 engagements the couple have undertaken between them in Washington DC, New York and Virginia across the four days.

The King and Queen headed for neighbouring state Virginia where thousands of people turned out to catch a glimpse of the royal couple.
