Camelot Theme Park

A cherished theme park in the heart of the UK once attracted a whopping 2.5 million visitors every year, with its towering 1,000ft roller coaster undoubtedly adding to its appeal. Yet, after a thrilling 29 years, it closed its gates and was left to decay, with its glory days now distant memories.

Theme park enthusiasts may recall the enjoyable days spent at Camelot Theme Park in Lancashire, which spanned 140 acres and became increasingly popular after opening in 1983. The park drew inspiration from King Arthur's Camelot and welcomed thousands of guests through its iconic white castle entrance before they were immersed in the pseudo-medieval attraction owned by Park Hall Leisure.

Jousting spectacles transported visitors back in time, alongside exhilarating rides and entertainment. Some of its most favoured attractions were Whirlwind, Excalibur, Gauntlet, Dragon Heights, Pendragon's Plunge, The Galleon and Formula-K Go-Karts, which entertained kids for hours.

Yet Camelot's most celebrated ride was undoubtedly the mighty 1,000ft roller coaster, The Knightmare, which debuted in 2006. Reportedly costing a staggering £3 million to construct, it swiftly became a firm favourite among thrill-seekers eager to experience its stomach-churning twists and turns, including a near-vertical drop ominously nicknamed 'the psycho drop'.

The theme park was also home to The Twister log flume and three sizeable water slides. Additionally, a large caterpillar roller coaster train wound its way across the entire expanse of the park, which would later spark years of nostalgia.

By the late 1980s, Camelot had been acquired by Granada and was at its peak, attracting a remarkable 2.5 million visitors annually. Yet the golden era began to fade as footfall declined to roughly 500,000 per year in 1995.

The theme park was subsequently sold to Prime Resorts Limited, which introduced new attractions, Excalibur 2, Whirlwind, and Knightmare, in a bid to boost visitor numbers. Despite this, visitor numbers continued to slide.

By 2000, the park was welcoming 400,000 guests annually, yet by 2009, that figure had plummeted below 300,000. Tragically, the once-flourishing park shut its gates for good in 2012, with countless attractions sold off to venues across Europe.

Yet vast sections of the medieval theme park remain abandoned to this day, including its famous Knightmare ride, with buildings covered in graffiti, corroding roller coasters, and haunting remnants of what were once joyful family days out.

Urban explorer Matthew Holmes visited the deserted site in 2017 and disclosed: "I went to the theme park when I was 13 years old, and most adults have been. I thought, let's go have a look and see what's there. I went inside, and instantly all these memories came back from when I was a child. It was quite sad to walk around, it is very dilapidated. All that excitement and fun to be replaced by empty space. It's frozen in time. All these rides are still there."

Previous proposals to demolish the theme park have come and gone, leaving it untouched. More recently, plans were outlined to destroy the theme park and construct a 350-home village in its place, though these have yet to be approved.

For the time being, the site remains abandoned and has occasionally hosted sporadic events, such as a live-action zombie horror experience. Nevertheless, the cherished memories of Camelot will endure, in one way or another.
