Lidl is giving away £1,000 in vouchers to celebrate the opening of its first store. The company, which opened its first UK store in 1994, is giving away £1,000 in Lidl Plus vouchers with 10 £100 vouchers hidden inside Lidl’s new limited-edition Gingerbread Storekits.

The limited-edition Lidl Gingerbread Store kits will be available for free to shoppers nationwide from 10am on Thursday, November 27, via www.lidlgingerbreadstore.co.uk, with 1,000 up for grabs. The 1,000th store, due to open in East Grinstead store in Sussex, will provide the inspiration for the new store kit, with handmade gingerbread panels and icing to candy cane bollards, edible Lidl billboards, and chocolate decorations.  Gift-wrapped inside ten kits are £100 Lidl Plus vouchers which could be won by lucky shoppers.

Joanna Gomer, marketing director at Lidl GB, commented: “Reaching our 1,000th UK store is a huge milestone for Lidl, and we want to celebrate in a way that everyone across the country can enjoy.

“Our Gingerbread houses have been a customer favourite, so we mixed things up a bit by creating a special kit that not only showcases our new East Grinstead store, but also captures the fun and festive spirit of the season.”

Designed and hand-crafted by Sussex-based gingerbread aficionado Fay Miller, alongside the miniature kits available for shoppers, a larger gingerbread replica of the building has also been constructed to commemorate the 1,000th store’s opening.

The model will be showcased in the East Grinstead store throughout the festive season.

The company has seen profits nearly quadruple in the last year, rising to a record £156.8 million.

Latest accounts place the chain as the UK’s sixth biggest grocer, with a pre-tax profit in the 12 months to 28 February soaring from the previous year’s £43.6 million.

The German-owned discount supermarket has enjoyed a significant financial boost as the country looks for alternative options in a cost-of-living crisis. Revenues have risen almost 8% to £11.7 billion, making it Britain’s fastest-growing physical supermarket chain.

The company believes that as much as £400 million has come from winning customers from its rivals.

Ryan McDonnell, Lidl GB CEO, said: “Our results reflect the momentum we’ve built and the trust shoppers place in us. More households are choosing to shop with us more often, because we continue to deliver on our promise of outstanding quality at the lowest possible prices.

“Over the last year we have continued to operate with our discounter efficiency at the heart of everything we do, all the while investing strategically in areas that will benefit our people, suppliers and communities.”
