All tourists have been urged to follow a key airport rule, as failing to do so could result in delays at security when travelling. It's something worth knowing as travel season is already in full swing, and many Brits are keen to jet off on holidays for some well-deserved sun and relaxation.
The rule was recently shared on TikTok by a travel agent called Jake who posts all sorts of candid advice online, and it's something you may never have thought of before. It's a good idea to read up on the topic, and take note of the airport rule, as it could make a difference to how long you spend queuing at airport security.
It's not the first travel advice of its kind to be shared recently either. Previously, tourists were also told to expect "hell" due to growing queues at a popular airport.
Jake said: "This is the number one reason for delays at airport security in the UK right now, and almost everyone has one in their bag. But, there's one thing that's catching everybody out.
"It's these. Reusable, stainless steel water bottles because, while the 100ml rule has been scrapped, and for some airports you can take up to two litres of liquids with you, these still need to be be emptied."
He continued: "That's purely because the machines can't check the liquid that's in these bottles. So, if you do have one in your bag and it's got liquid in, then you're going to have your bag pulled aside.
"You're going to have that embarrassing moment on the belt where you see your bag go down a different aisle. So, as you're heading to security, make sure you empty these.
"The good news is though, if you do forget and you have your water bottle in there with liquid in, they're not going to make you throw your expensive water bottle away. They're just going to pour out the liquid that's in there.
"So this is just going to cause further delays for you getting through duty-free and being able to relax before you get on your flight."
It may be a simple tip, but it's one that's definitely worth knowing. Following the rule could prevent a big problem that can be so easily avoided.
Little you may know, you must completely empty your reusable water bottle before going through airport security. The 100ml liquid restriction may not apply to the container itself, but any liquid inside is prohibited and can result in your bottle being confiscated.
Even if your local airport allows large liquid containers or doesn't require removing electronics from bags, metal or insulated bottles (like Hydro Flasks or Yetis), bottles usually need to be emptied. The advanced scanners cannot "see" through double-wall insulation, so it's best to be ahead of the game.
As Jake pointed out, some airports also allow you to carry containers that hold up to two litres of liquid in your hand luggage. However, this depends entirely on the specific airport you are flying from, as it requires advanced 3D scanning technology.
Therefore, it's always best to check the rules for your chosen airport before travelling. At hubs like London Heathrow, London Gatwick, Birmingham and Edinburgh, you can take containters that carry up to two litres each.
However, this rule is only in place at certain airports. If you're unsure, always get verification from your airport before travelling.
