Labour is shifting deckchairs on the Titanic if it thinks ousting the PM will make any difference. The Tories did the same umpty-ump times but to no avail. As with the Conservatives before, the problem is with Labour as a party, not with any one leader. Frankly, a new Leftist leader is likely to spook the markets further, catalyse budget cuts anathema to the Labour benches (most of whom know they will be out at the next election anyway) and force an earlyish election.

To be fair to Sir Keir, he was dealt a bad hand by the outgoing Conservatives. Then again, Labour has merely stared at that hand for two years. Labour had every chance to fix the mess left behind.

Nigel Farage won't be fearful of facing Manchester Mayor, Andy Burnham. Sure, Burnham may have some poll bounce early on as PM. But I'd wager the light will dim fast as reality sets in.

The problem is Labour as a party, just as with the Conservatives, rather than any individual leader. It is the party which won't untangle us from the ECHR, maximise the benefits of Brexit, or boost productivity.

Is Burnham or 'Red Ange' going to wave a magic wand (even from a leftwing perspective) when it comes to the NHS or welfare? Believe that and I've got some seafront property in Birmingham you might be very interested in!

Reform UK – which has won over Boris Johnson's 2019 voting coalition – won't be scared of Sir Keir exiting stage-left. But the country should worry that until a new election is called the UK will be plunged into even more chaos.
