Viewers of The Testaments are extremely intrigued by the actor behind the show's most menacing character, reports the Mirror.

WARNING: This article contains spoilers from The Testaments TV show and the novel by Margaret Atwood

The Testaments continues to grip audiences on Disney+ and Hulu following the bleak, dystopian series' most devastating episode yet, which serves as a sequel to The Handmaid's Tale.

Numerous viewers are eager to discover more about Commander Judd and the actor portraying him after the character took centre stage in the most recent instalment. Here's everything you need to know.

Commander Judd is portrayed by English actor Charlie Carrick, who originates from Newcastle-upon-Tyne.

The 39 year old star was raised in England and developed a passion for acting following a school production of William Shakespeare's timeless classic A Midsummer Night's Dream.

He subsequently studied at the Vancouver Film School after being inspired by his grandfather, who relocated to Canada to work following the war.

Carrick's mother was born in Canada but the family ultimately returned to Newcastle.

The star has appeared in numerous films and TV shows throughout the years in both American and British productions, including We Were Liars, Hidden Assets, Cedar Cove, Reign, ITV's Deep Water, COBRA on Sky, and Departure.

Most recently, Carrick has appeared in The Royal We, The Apprentice movie, The Copenhagen Test.

According to IMDb, he is next set to star in Call Me Queen and Stranger in Town, which are both currently in post-production. Carrick's Commander Judd in The Testaments is a pivotal figure in the show, just as he was in the 2019 Margaret Atwood novel upon which the series is based.

Much as in the book, there are striking similarities both in physical appearance and within Gilead's hierarchy of power between Commander Judd and Commander Fred Waterford (Joseph Fiennes).

In the novel, Commander Judd is rumoured to dispose of his Wives, before seeking out a younger woman to marry, and he subsequently becomes engaged to Agnes (Chase Infiniti).

For those curious about who Agnes weds in The Testaments - Aunt Lydia (Ann Dowd) spares her this fate when she takes up a position as an Aunt at Ardua Hall, meaning she need not become a wife at all.

In the novel, Commander Judd had five Wives, with Shunammite (Rowan Blanchard) becoming his final one.

Nevertheless, it remains to be seen whether the television series will follow the same path as the book, given the departures that already exist between the source material and the adaptation.

In the TV series, Commander Judd's wife Penny (Ellen Olivia) was revealed to be expecting a child, with the Plums expressing astonishment at her pregnancy without the involvement of a Handmaid.

Tragedy befell the couple in episode six, however, when Penny suffered complications and lost the baby, leaving Commander Judd devastated.

Commander Judd relayed the heartbreaking events to Aunt Lydia (Ann Dowd), prompting her to propose using a Handmaid should they continue to struggle to conceive. However, he was swift to remind Aunt Lydia that this was no longer her domain, given her new role as head of the school.

The portrayal of Commander Judd in the series seems considerably more sympathetic and gentler than his literary counterpart.

Once again, viewers will need to sit tight and see how the show diverges from the source material — and whether he is secretly doing away with his Wives.

The Testaments airs on Disney+ and Hulu on Wednesdays
