Former Good Morning Britain presenter Piers Morgan has insisted the UK “must reclaim” the United States on the 250th anniversary of the country’s independence from Britain. The US officially declared itself independent in 1776, and as King Charles prepares to address Congress on his latest state visit with Queen Camilla, Piers thinks it’s time for change.
He hit out on X: “If President Trump wants to take the Falkland Islands away from Britain, then we must reclaim the United States. Perfect way to celebrate the 250th anniversary of American Independence. King Charles can announce it to Congress next week."
It comes after Donald Trump made clear his intention to punish NATO allies for refusing to join in strikes against Iran led by the US and Israel.
Keir Starmer’s spokesperson, however, said: “The Falkland Islands have hugely voted overwhelmingly in favour of remaining a UK overseas territory, and we’ve always stood behind the islanders’ right to self-determination and the fact that sovereignty rests with the UK.”
They added: “The question of the Falkland Islands and the UK’s sovereignty and the islanders’ right to self-determination is not in question, and we’ve expressed that position clearly and consistently.”
It’s not the first time in recent weeks Piers has slammed Trump, as an AI-generated image of the president depicted as Jesus Christ set off alarm bells earlier this month.
Piers tweeted at the time: “This has gone down very badly with many of Trump’s biggest cheerleaders. He seems to be on a mission to p*** off absolutely everyone, for reasons that are beyond my understanding given his current approval numbers."
