A traveller claims to have discovered the cheapest country in Europe after paying the equivalent of just 87p for a meal. Globetrotter Steph, who has visited 64 countries, took to Instagram to share her "surprise" during her trip.

"I visited one of the most affordable countries in Europe, but what stood out wasn't just the prices," she explained in a video. "It was how different everything felt." Steph went on to heap praise on how cinemas in the country had embraced "choices that reflect a different cultural mix", while the streets and Metro service were "some of the cleanest" she had ever encountered.

She continued: "Here you can get a meal for just €1 [87p] and take the bus for just 25 cents [22p]. But this place isn't just about being cheap - it feels completely different from the rest of Europe."

Steph's destination? The Eastern European nation of Belarus. "Then there's the history," she gushed. "You can see it all around you, in the architecture, monuments, and city layout that tell the story of the region over time." She added: "It's the kind of place that makes you realise how diverse Europe really is, and how every destination has its own identity and rhythm."

Steph also informed her followers that Belarus has no McDonald's, but instead boasts its own equivalent called Mak.by. "Their KFC is decorated with a Soviet mural, while the locals watch Russian and Bollywood movies instead of Hollywood," she added.

The traveller also highlighted the capital city, Minsk, likening it to "mini Paris" with "French-style architecture", noting that the Metro is "seriously cleaner than almost anywhere I have seen in Europe". Steph continued: "And the past is everywhere - Lenin statues are still standing, Soviet era buildings and monuments are in almost every corner. And they even have the largest open-air collection of Soviet tanks, rockets, and missiles."

Responding to her post, one Belarussian remarked: "I'm from Belarus. It's cheap for EU citizens, but for locals our country is a bit expensive. But still I liked that you enjoyed my country!"

A second person commended the nation, stating: "Beautiful. I spent several months, there and I never felt so safe, comfortable and happy." A third proclaimed: "Minsk - one of the most beautiful cities in the world!"

While a fourth Instagram user commented: "It really does look like a mini Paris. I was surprised when I went there. Some of the buildings are literally French style. And it's so clean there."

Steph later enthused: "It honestly felt like stepping into a different world...somewhere between past and present. And the craziest part? Almost no one talks about it."
