Vernon Kay's BBC Radio 2 colleague issued an apology to the star's wife, Tess Daly, at the start of his show, after the radio presenter opened up about his health issues.
Vernon, 51, has been married to former Strictly host Tess, 57, since 2003 and together they have two daughters. The star often shares insights into his family life on Radio 2, including the fact he has been struggling to complete household tasks due to his bad back.
Admitting he was set to visit a chiropractor whilst speaking to fellow presenter Gary Davies, Vernon said his ailment has had an impact on his ability to finish work in the couple's garden.
Vernon said: “Chiropractor this afternoon….I think I’ll be a little bit better, but the thing is we’re pre-Summer aren’t we? So, at the moment, I’m getting the garden ready.
“Done a bit of lawn mowing and I’ve got a list as long as my arm of jobs to do, but I can’t do them with a bad back! I don’t want to get anyone in either.”
Gary joked that it was a good excuse, before Vernon interjected “to keep my feet up…and do absolutely nothing!”. At this point Gary exclaimed: “Sorry Tess, sorry!”
Vernon then replied: “She sent me a message this morning on the train, ‘Why is half the lawn done?’.”
When questioned on whether he had taught Tess how to mow the lawn, Vernon said: “That’s my job, no that’s my job. That’s my job, I love it. Put my headphones in and away we go!”
This isn’t the first time Vernon has talked about his health in recent years, as he recently shared his fears about getting older. Speaking to the Telegraph, he admitted that he had started to think about how many Christmases were left.
He told the publication: “That everyone else is getting older. We were making decisions about what to do for Christmas and I hope my parents don’t read this, because you think 'How many more Christmases have we got left?' I can’t begin to think what it will be like without them. I’m welling up just thinking about it. But that’s life isn’t it?.”
Vernon’s comments came after he recalled saving his brother from drowning on his mother’s 40th birthday. He told The Times: “My uncle Graham, his brother Robert, his daughter, my auntie Christine, my cousin Lee, me, Dad, Mum, and my younger brother Steven all stayed in a villa in Praia da Luz on the Algarve….
"One time, I saved my brother from drowning. He dived in the pool and started panicking, so he owes me one there.
“It was my mum’s 40th birthday and I remember having peri peri chicken for the first time and Mum having her first ever cigarette. She smoked two drags and coughed for the rest of the night.”
