Grammy-winning music legend Augie Meyers died in his sleep on Saturday, March 7, at the age of 85. A post on his Facebook page confirmed that his wife, Sara, was at his side. The post read: "Augie Meyers, a true Texas Legend passed away peacefully in his sleep on Saturday, March 7th, at 85 with his wife, Sara, at his side. A Memorial Service for the public will be announced soon. The family thanks all of Augie's friends and fans for their prayers during this time." In recent times, he had been suffering from an undisclosed illness.

The star was best known for fusing Tex-Mex and rock as the keyboardist for trailblazing ’60s act the Sir Douglas Quintet and Grammy-winning supergroup the Texas Tornados, which he founded in the 1990s with Doug Sahm, Flaco Jiménez, and Freddy Fender. He was the last surviving member of the quartet. His biggest solo hit (Hey Baby) Que Paso is widely known as the unofficial anthem of San Antonio.

The star also enjoyed a successful career operating his own record labels, including the Texas Re-Cord Company, co-founded with Lucky Tomblin, Superbeet Records, White Boy Records, and El Sendero.

Alongside this, he worked as a studio musician, playing with numerous iconic artists, including Bob Dylan, Tom Jones, John & Mary and Tom Waits.

Tributes flooded in for the influential star as the news became public. Writing on Instagram, one fan wrote: "Great musician and created that sound that made Tex-Mex music awesome."

Antoehr added: "Absolute legend…Doug Sahm, Freddy Fender and Flaco Jimenez were there to welcome him on the other side….gracias amigos!" referencing his Texas Tornadoes bandmates.

A third chimed in on Facebook: "You will be deeply missed, but your music and legacy will continue to inspire us all. Rest in peace, Augie."

A fourth shared: "I am so, so sorry...I was just thinking of him the other day and appreciating the gifts he gave all of us and will continue to give. I am so glad that we saw him perform not long ago in San Antonio."

A fifth lamented: "Condolences to the family. May he RIP. I loved waiting on him. Loved when he came out to listen to music from jam sessions to regular bands. A real class act. A giant lost to the jam session in the sky."

Meanwhile, a sixth penned: "Oh man, I'm sad to read this, my condolences to the family. Rest In Peace Augie Meyers . He was such an Icon, and will be missed."
