The declaration follows a separate weekend warning that he would levy a 100 per cent tariff on Canadian imports should the country proceed with a proposed trade agreement with China.

In Thursday's Truth Social message, Trump stated that "Canada has wrongfully, illegally, and steadfastly refused to certify the Gulfstream 500, 600, 700, and 800 Jets".

He added that the US is decertifying Canada's Bombardier Global Express aircraft until America's Gulfstream receives full certification.

Trump alleged that Canada is blocking Gulfstream sales within its borders through the same certification procedures.

"If, for any reason, this situation is not immediately corrected, I am going to charge Canada a 50% Tariff on any and all Aircraft sold into the United States of America," the US president declared.

According to CBS News, no previous president has directly decertified aircraft - such decisions have traditionally been delegated to aviation safety specialists at the Federal Aviation Administration, noted Richard Aboulafia, managing director of industry consulting firm AeroDynamic Advisory.

"Using aircraft safety as a tool in a trade war is just an incredibly bad idea," he remarked.
